hefferman Roy Heffernan, a member of the Class of 1978, was a standout football and lacrosse player at Middlebury. On the gridiron, he was one of the top running backs in school history, while earning All-American honors on the lacrosse team in the spring.

Heffernan’s rushing records stood for 20 years and were broken only when players were permitted to play four seasons of varsity football. He is second all-time at Middlebury, with 474 rushes for 2,631 yards, while his average of 5.6 yards per carry is third. Heffernan’s school record of 311 yards rushing in a 42-28 win over WPI still stands as a single-game record today.

His teams boasted a combined record of 14-2 during his junior and senior seasons.

On the lacrosse field Heffernan was a standout for Panther teams that won four-consecutive ECAC Championships (52-10), including the first in school history in 1975. National recognition was hard to come by for New England teams in the era, but Heffernan’s effort landed him a spot as a third-team All-American in 1977. He previously earned honorable mention All-American honors as a junior. Heffernan is second all-time at Middlebury with 109 assists and 237 points, while tallying 128 goals.
