Box Score The top-ranked Middlebury field hockey team remained undefeated, scoring a season-high 11 times in an 11-1 NESCAC victory Sunday over Wesleyan. The Panthers (13-0, 8-0) continue conference play Saturday hosting Bates at 11:00 a.m., while the Cardinals (4-9, 0-8) are home at 12:00 p.m. against Amherst the same day.
The hosts, winners of 29-straight games, jumped out to the early lead, opening the scoring 3:17 into the contest on a goal by Julia Richards inside the right post. The advantage doubled five minutes later, as Marissa Baker swept in a pass from Erin Nicholas. Baker struck again with 18:41 on the clock, lifting a rebound into the upper portion of the cage immediately after Wesleyan's Olivia Baglieri recorded a defensive save.
Middlebury scored twice more by the end of the half, with the goals separated by 1:34. Nicholas weaved her way through the Cardinal defense for her eighth tally of the fall, while Danielle Brown capped the scoring in the opening 35 minutes, batting in a rebound on a shot by Nicholas.
In the second half, Isabel Chandler kept the offense going for the Panthers, tipping in a pass from Richards 7:05 into the frame. Just over a minute later, Baker completed her hat trick, one-timing a pass from Nicholas. Brown picked up her second tally of the game with 23:31 showing on the clock to make the score 8-0, while Diana Milne's laser from the top of the arc came eight minutes later. Middlebury's Kelly Coyle blast from the right side of the net increased the host's lead to double figures, while Alison Denby redirected a shot by Amanda Bozorgi with 1:47 remaining.
Wesleyan's Erica Horowitz spoiled the shutout bid with 1:09 left in the game, sweeping a shot into the lower-left side of the Middlebury goal.
In goal for the Panthers, Megan Collins and Grace Harlan each played a half with Collins recording one save. For the Cardinals, Delaney Wood (26:19) finished with four stops and Caitlin Grant (43:41) recorded three saves.
Middlebury finished with a 25-4 advantage in shots and took 24 of the 25 penalty corners.
