Panthers Close Out Home Portion of Regular Season With 3-0 Win

Box Score

Middlebury scored a pair of first-half goals and tacked on another score in the second half on its way to a 3-0 victory over Bates (8-6, 3-6) Saturday on a wet and windy Kohn Field. The fifth-ranked Panthers (11-3, 6-3) close out the regular season Tuesday evening at #20 Williams, while the Bobcats see a four-game winning streak ended and will host Colby on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

Middlebury got on the board just under seven minutes into the game with the fourth of the year from Grace Jennings. Emma Johns carried the ball up the left side of the field, before sending it to the stick of Jennings, who found space behind her defender and finished for the 1-0 advantage.

A little less than five minutes later, Middlebury doubled its advantage when Lauren Schweppe tallied her first goal of the game and ninth of the season. Jennings carried the ball down the left side and knocked a centering pass onto the stick of Schweppe, who tipped it into the back of the cage.

With a little more than a minute remaining in the opening half, Bates looked to cut the Panther lead in half when Adah Lindquist found the back of the cage, but her goal was disallowed after the officials ruled it hit the back of her stick.

After the hosts took a 2-0 lead into the break, Middlebury gained a three-goal advantage at the 47:39 mark. As a part of a penalty corner, Johns inserted the ball to Jennings, who stopped it before Schweppe blasted it into the right side for her second tally of the game and 10th this fall.

Bates looked to get on the scoreboard in the 64th minute when Jessie Moriarty connected on a shot from the right side, but Middlebury's Caroline Knapp was on the near post and thwarted the attempt for the defensive save.

Both teams tallied eight shots in the contest, while the Panthers possessed a narrow 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Emily Miller recorded five saves for fifth shutout of the season and 13th of her career. Miller's career shutout total moves her into third place in the program's record book past Emily Knapp '15 with 12. Adelae Durand made one stop for the Bobcats.
