The Middlebury track and field teams competed in the Amherst Spring Fling on Saturday, as both teams turned in strong performances to place second. The Panther women earned 90 points, trailing only Wheaton (Mass.) with 94 points, while the men secured 100.50, with Amherst taking top honors with 152. Middlebury returns to action next weekend when they compete at the two-day Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College.
The women shined in the field events, collecting a host of top finishes. Kreager Taber won the pole vault, clearing a height of 11'1.75", while Alex Cook took top honors in the long jump with a distance of 18'1". Helene Rowland had a winning heave of 37'6.75" in the shot put, while Emily Ray boasted a distance of 106' in the discus. Rebecca Gorman added a first-place performance in the javelin with a throw of 138'7".
Lucy Lang was first out of 36 runners in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line in 2:19.86 seconds.
For the men, Nicholas Hendrix ran a swift time of 22.01 seconds to win the 200 meters, while Jonathan Fisher captured first place in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with a clocking of 56.87.
Minhaj Rahman won the hammer throw with a toss of 182'11", while Zack Sieb took that same spot in the discus with a distance of 138'11". Nathaniel Klein added to the strong performance by the Middlebury throwers, winning the shot put with a marking of 48'.75".
