The Middlebury men's distance medley relay team earned All-American honors and Jimmy Martinez qualified for Saturday's final in the 400-meter run to highlight the first day of the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. The two-day meet is being held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The final day of competition is scheduled to begin Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
The men's DMR crossed the line in third place for the second-straight year. The quartet of Nathan Hill, Tyler Farrell, James Mulliken and Kevin Serrao stopped the clock with a time of 9:57.94, marking the third-consecutive All-American finish and the fourth overall with the other occurring in 2012. The Panthers were edged for the runner-up spot by the team from Washington-St. Louis (9:57.81), while SUNY Geneseo won the national title with a mark of 9:56.63. The top-10 places stopped the clock just 6.47 seconds apart.
The women's DMR team of Tasha Greene, Kate McCluskey, Meg Wilson and Abigail Nadler raced to the line with a time of 12:16.33 to place 12th.
In preliminary action on Friday, Martinez recorded the seventh-best time of 48.35 in the 400-meter run. He will run for a national title on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
McCluskey competed in the women's 400 preliminary event, crossing the finish line in a tie for eighth with a time of 56.30, but just missed Saturday's final by 0.003 seconds.
