Middlebury Track & Field Cruises at Home Classic

The Middlebury men's and women's indoor track and field teams placed first at the Middlebury Winter Classic on Saturday as the Panthers boasted numerous first-place performances. Middlebury's women earned 286 points, placing ahead of Oswego State (135) and Castleton (83), while the men finished with 273 points. Rounding out the men's scoring were Oswego State (148) and Castleton (40). Both teams return to action Saturday, hosting the Middlebury Winterfell at 11:30 a.m. on the New Balance Track in the Virtue Field House.

For the women, Helene Rowland set a school record in the shot put with a winning toss of 38'6.75". Kreager Taber cleared the bar at 11'2.25" to win in the pole vault, while Sophie Steinberg, Kristin Kimble and Jane Freda each won a jumping event. Steinberg (4'11.75") and Kimble (4'11.75") tied for top honors in the high jump and Freda (16'3.75") won the long jump.

Ellie Greenberg was the first to cross the finish line in the 200-meter dash (26.98), while Paige Fernandez ran a winning time of 1:00.22 in the 400 meters. The Panthers were also triumphant in the 800-meter run when Meg Wilson won the race in 2:20.25, while Sasha Whittle captured the mile in 5:24.89. Talia Ruxin took first in the longest race of the day, crossing the finish line in the 3,000 in 10:36.92.

Jimmy Martinez was a double winner for the Panthers, taking top honors in the 500-meter run with a school record of 1:06.05. He also won the 200-meter dash in 22.56 seconds. Nicholas Hendrix won the 60-meter dash (7.27 seconds), Kevin Serrao claimed the 1,000 meters in school-record time (2:29.65), Jonathan Perlman finished first in the mile (4:23.07) and Connor Evans raced first to the tape in the 3,000 meters (8:55.26).

In the field events, Dylan Mortimer cleared a height of 6'0" to take top honors in the high jump, while John Natalone won the pole vault at 14'0.5". Tyler Chaisson had a heave of 44'1.5", placing first in the shot put and Minhaj Rahman had a top distance of 46'7.25" in the 35-pound weight throw.
