Box Score Top-ranked Middlebury opened its 2016 season with a 3-0 NESCAC road victory Saturday at Connecticut College. The Panthers outshot the Camels by a 13-4 count for the game, using a pair of first-half goals along with a score early in the second stanza en route to the win. Middlebury is right back in action tomorrow when it opens the home portion of the schedule with a 4:00 p.m. start against Smith.
With under 10 minutes left in the opening half, Middlebury's first goal of the season came at the 25:30 mark when Molly Freeman redirected a pass in front of the goal from Annie Leonard.
The Panthers struck again a little more than a minute later at 26:39, when Leonard scored on a shot from the left side of the arc via a pass from Susanna Baker. Middlebury took the two-goal advantage into the break, limiting the Camels to just one shot in the opening half.
Less than two minutes of the intermission, the visitors struck for their third goal when Grace Jennings collected a loose ball in front of the net.
Panther goalie Emily Miller made one save in goal to earn the win for her first shutout this season and ninth of her career, while Ryley van der Velde made five saves for the Camels. Middlebury finished with a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners.
