A New England Championship victory by Adrian Walsh during the women's 10,000-meter run and a pair of school records highlighted the Middlebury track & field teams' participation in two-day Open New England Championships on Friday and Saturday hosted by Southern Connecticut State. The women finished in a tie for 15th out of 38 scoring teams at the event, while the men wound up 23rd of 38. All three NCAA divisions were represented at the meet, as top-eight finishers earned All-New England honors. The teams will return to action next Wednesday and Thursday at the ECAC Championships hosted by Westfield State.
During the women's action, four Panthers earned All-New England honors paced by Walsh's win. She crossed the line in the 10,000-meter run with a winning mark of 35:54.29, beating her next nearest competitor by more than 25 seconds. Lucy Lang was third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.79.
A pair of seventh-place efforts came from Alexandra Morris and Abigail Nadler. Morris stopped the clock during the 400-meter dash with a school-record time of 55.69, bettering her previous mark of 56.59 by .9 of a second. Morris' time is the 10th-quickest mark in Division III this spring. Nadler posted a time of 17:22.42 in the 5,000-meter run.
In the men's events, Kevin Serrao lowered his own school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.14, good for eighth place and All-New England accolades. Sebastian Matt and Brendan Wood also picked up All-New England accolades with fifth-place efforts. Matt crossed the line fifth in the 5,000-meter run (14:46.41), while Wood was fifth during the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:27.38).
The 4x400-meter relay quartet of Jeremy Carter, James Mulliken, Jimmy Martinez and Alex Nichols received All-New England laurels with a seventh-place finish in a time of 3:18.60.
