Box Score Audrey Quirk scored with 1:27 left in overtime to lift fifth-ranked Middlebury (12-3, 7-3) to a 3-2 victory over #20 Williams (9-6, 6-4) in the regular-season finale for both teams. The teams will find out their post-season fates when NESCAC play is completed on Wednesday. The victory extends the Panthers winning streak to four games.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead 10:04 into the game when Grace Jennings netted her fifth of the season with some great individual moves.
Williams tied the game 22:49 into the contest when Rachel Brissette scored on a rebound after a shot from Katie Gallop on a penalty corner.
With 4:25 remaining the first half, the Panthers went on top 2-1 with the first goal of her career by Emma Johns. Lauren Schweppe fed a pass from the top of the zone to Johns on the left, who fired a shot past Williams' keeper Margaret Draper.
The Ephs came back once again, tying the game just 1:31 into the second half when Libby Dolan scored from close range after a pass from Brissette.
Annie Leonard nearly gave the Panthers the lead with just over 18 minutes remaining, but her shot went just wide. Panther goalie Emily Miller kept it a 2-2 game five minutes later, denying Meredith Wright, who had a nice look on a penalty corner.
The Panthers nearly scored in the final seconds with a flurry of shots, but Williams held on to force the game into overtime.
The extra session was all Middlebury as the Panthers outshot their opponents 8-2, including five-straight penalty corners to end the game. Draper turned aside a couple of good looks from Schweppe and Jennings, before Quirk broke through with the game winner.
After Quirk inserted the ball on the penalty corner, Leonard ending up chipping the ball toward the goal, where Quirk was camped on the doorstep to knock it home for her first goal of the year.
Middlebury finished with a 23-18 advantage in shots and a 14-11 edge in penalty corners. Miller made six saves in goal to pick up the win, while Draper made 11 stops for the hosts.
