Box Score Middlebury's Annie Leonard tied Saturday's game at 1-1 in the 60th minute, but a goal in the 67th minute by Bowdoin on a penalty stroke lifted the second-ranked Polar Bears to a 2-1 home victory over fourth-ranked Middlebury on Ryan Field. The Panthers (4-1, 3-1) return to action with a home contest Wednesday evening against Skidmore at 6:00 p.m.
In the opening minutes, Bowdoin was awarded a penalty stroke, but the attempt was missed as both teams traded possession and opportunity throughout the remainder of the half. With just six seconds remaining before halftime, Rachel Kennedy put the hosts on the scoreboard. Kennedy finished off a feed from Liz Znamierowski, who worked the right sideline and cut across the endline before making a quick centering pass to Kennedy.
In the second half, the Panthers evened the game with 10:17 remaining in regulation on a successfully executed corner. Leonard cleanly stopped Jillian Green's insert for the Panthers and riffled off a shot from the top of the circle for her fourth goal of the season.
Middlebury successfully defended a pair of corners in the final 10 minutes to keep the game tied at 1-1. Nicole Barbieri nearly converted on a one-on-one chance for the Polar Bears with Middlebury goalkeeper Emily Miller, but the Panther goalie made a split save to preserve the tie, as the result was a second penalty stroke for Bowdoin. Kennedy converted the opportunity in the 66th minute to give the Polar Bears a 2-1 victory.
Bowdoin outshot the visitors 24-8, with Miller making 10 saves for the Panthers and Clara Belitz tallying three stops for the Polar Bears. Middlebury successfully defended 17 corners against the Polar Bears, as Bowdoin held a 17-10 edge in the category and was unable to convert any opportunities.
