The Middlebury indoor track & field teams competed at the Open New England Championships on Friday and Saturday hosted by Division I Boston University. The event featured over 70 schools combined from all three NCAA divisions, as the women finished 12th of 38 teams with 21 points, while the men tied for 25th of 33 with six points. The teams will return to the track next Friday and Saturday for the ECAC Championships at the 168th Street Armory hosted by New York University.
On the men's side, Kevin Wood earned All-New England honors by finishing fourth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:37.03, good for four points. Middlebury's other point and All-New England honorees came from the distance medley relay team of Sam Cartwright, Alex Nichols, Lucas Carpinello and Wilder Schaaf, who stopped the clock in eighth place with a time of 9:57.95.
In women's competition, Erzie Nagy and Summer Spillane each posted All-New England laurels in a pair of events. Nagy led a quartet of top-10 finishers in the mile run with a third-place time of 4:56.53 for six points. Right behind Nagy was Spillane in fourth, crossing the line in 4:57.11 for five points, edging Sarah Guth for fifth place (4:57.18). Just out of the points was Alison Maxwell, who finished ninth (5:06.13).
The remaining five team points were scored by the All-New England distance medley relay team of Spillane, Paige Fernandez, Robin Vincent and Nagy with a third-place time of 11:48.44.
