Hannah Blackburn finished fifth in women's pentathlon and set a school record in the process, leading the Middlebury women's indoor track team to a seventh-place showing on Saturday at the Division III New England Women's Championship hosted by Smith, while the men were 17th at Springfield. The women racked up 47 team points with 30 teams participating, while the men posted 14 points with 26 teams competing.
With All-New England honors going to the top-eight placers in each event, Blackburn racked up 2,901 points during the five disciplines, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the long jump (16'6.5"). Maddie Pronovost also bettered the previous record with 2,870 points, good for seventh.
Other point-scoring performances were posted by Adrian Walsh in the 5,000-meter run (17:24.33, 2nd) for eight points, while the 4x800-meter relay also notched a runner-up effort (9:30.81), good for eight team points. Alison Maxwell led four Panthers who grabbed top-eight spots to the finish line during the mile. Maxwell's time was 4:53.63 for eight points, while Summer Spillane was third (4:59.62, 6 points). Erzie Nagy wound up sixth (5:02.48, 3 points), while Sarah Guth was right behind in seventh (5:02.82, 2 points).
Paige Fernandez ran to a sixth-place finish in the 600-meter run (1:37.88, 4 points), while the 4x400-meter relay quartet finished seventh (4:05.13, 2 points).
At Springfield in the men's competition, Sam Cartwright raced across the line fifth in the mile (4:19.57, 4 points), while Wilder Schaaf was just seconds behind in seventh (4:21.65, 2 points). Kevin Wood posted a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run (15:08.71, 3 points), while the men's distance medley relay of Cartwright, Tyler Farrell, Lucas Carpinello and Schaaf wound up fifth in 10:29.27 (4 points).
Rounding out the scorers for the Panthers was Daniel Plunkett, who tossed the shot put to a distance of 46'0.5", good for eighth place and a point.
The Panthers will return to the track next Friday when they take part in the Open New England Championships hosted by Boston University.
