An event win by Alison Maxwell during the 1500-meter run highlighted the Middlebury track & field teams' performances in the Division III New England Championships hosted by Springfield. The Panther women finished in fourth place out of 33 teams competing with 47 points, while the men were 11th out of 32 teams. Top-eight finishers in each event earned All-New England honors.
In addition to Maxwell's win in a time of 4:36.84, Katherine Tercek raced to a seventh-place finish in the same event (4:42.82). Kathleen Rominger was the runner-up in the 5,000m run (17:39.00), while Summer Spillane (10:59.38) and Abigail Pohl (11:22.81) were fifth and seventh in the 3,000m steeplechase, respectively. Jackie Kearney crossed the line in sixth during the 400m hurdles (1:05.08), while Alexandra Morris was seventh in the 400m run (58.38).
Other top-eight efforts were posted by Laura Strom with a sixth-place finish in the high jump (5'4.25”), while Maddie Pronovost earned 3,387 points to place seventh in the heptathlon.
On the men's side, Wilder Schaaf raced to the line with a runner-up time of 3:54.46 in the 1500m run, while Sam Cartwright was fifth (3:56.40) and Sam Klockenkemper was eighth (3:57.55). Jake Wood finished sixth in the 400m hurdles (54.88), just ahead of Kevin Chu in eighth (56.27). In the sprint races, Bryan Holtzman crossed the line sixth in the 100m dash (11.06), while Alex Nichols tied for seventh in the 200m dash (22.40). During the distance events, Sebastian Matt wound up eighth in the 5000m run (15:40.10).
In field events, Jason McCallum was the runner-up in the pole vault (15'3”), while Taylor Shortsleeve eclipsed the bar at 6'4” in the high jump, good for eighth.
The teams will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Open New England Championships hosted by Westfield State.
