A pair of school records fell on Saturday as the Middlebury College track & field teams took part in the Open New England Championships hosted by Westfield State. The men finished in a tie for 23rd out of 38 scoring teams at the event, while the women were in a tie for 37th of 39. Top-eight finishers earned All-New England honors. The teams will return to action next Thursday and Friday at the ECAC Championships hosted by RPI.
During men's action, Wilder Schaaf stopped the clock in a school-record time of 3:50.95 in the 1500m run. good for seventh. The 4x800m relay team of Lucas Carpinello, Cooper Kersey, Schaaf and Sam Craft crossed the finish line with a school-record time of 7:40.59 for seventh.
Bryan Holtzman turned in a pair of impressive finishes in the 100 and 200 meter races. He finished fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.77, while crossing the line in eighth in the 200 (21.86). Other top-eight efforts were recorded by Alex Nichols with a sixth-place finish in the 400m dash (48.53).
Off the track, Jason McCallum finished just out of the points in ninth during the pole vault competition, clearing the bar at 14'11".
On the women's side, Lauren Pincus scored points for Middlebury with a seventh-place throw in the javelin (131'). Other top-15 finishes were posted by Katherine Tercek, who finished in 10th in the 1500m run (4:38.55), and Laura Strom who cleared the bar at 5'5", good for 14th.
