Box Score Third-ranked Middlebury scored three goals in the final 27 minutes en route to a 3-0 victory Tuesday evening over Williams in NESCAC action on Williamson Field. The Panthers (9-1, 5-1) stay on the road for a pair of league games this weekend at 17th-ranked Trinity on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and will turn around and play Hamilton at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
In the first half, the Panthers outshot the Ephs (6-3, 3-2) by a 7-1 count but couldn't find the back of the cage. Williams' lone opportunity in the opening half came in the 20th minute. After an attempted clear by the Panthers, Katie Gallop sent a powerful cross toward the Middlebury goal. The pass went directly to Rachel Brissette, but Middlebury goalie Emily Knapp came from the opposite side of the net to deny Annie VanWagenen's scoring chance.
Middlebury came out of the halftime break with four shots during the opening five minutes. After the Panthers drew a penalty corner, Middlebury got on the scoreboard at 43:00 when Alyssa DiMaio inserted the ball to Shannon Hutteman at the top of the circle, who found the back of the cage with a low, hard shot.
The Panthers kept up the offensive pressure and induced another penalty corner. Inserting the ball from the same side as the first goal, the pass again went to the top of the circle to the stick of Catherine Fowler. The senior sent a pass down low to Bridget Instrum, who slid it past Margaret Draper at 53:38.
Just under 10 minutes later, the Panthers tacked on the third goal. Following an Eph foul just outside the circle, Middlebury sent a cross immediately into the circle. After a deflection off Draper, Anna Kenyon finessed a shot into the corner at the 63:28 mark.
The visitors held a decided edge in both shots (16-2) and penalty corners (13-2). Knapp needed just one save in front of the Middlebury goal for her first shutout this fall, while Draper was credited with eight stops for the Ephs.
