Third-Ranked Field Hockey Cruises Past Bates

Box Score

Third-ranked Middlebury had little trouble with Bates (3-9, 0-8), topping the Bobcats by a 6-0 score on a rainy and cool day at Kohn Field. The Panthers (12-1, 8-1) host Castleton for a 6:00 p.m. game on Tuesday, while Bates (3-9, 0-8) hosts Husson on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

Jillian Green scored the first of her two goals and put the Panthers on the board in the 13th minute. On a penalty corner, she tapped in a cross from left to right at the 12:51 mark off the stick of Catherine Fowler. Just over 12 minutes later, Green posted her second of the game and fifth of the season on a crisp pass from Lauren Berestecky after the Panthers worked the ball around the circle during a penalty corner.

Middlebury made it a 3-0 game 3:21 later when Fowler tipped in a shot by Olivia Jurkowitz following a penalty corner. Just over a minute later, Fowler looked to make it a four-goal advantage for the Panthers, but Bates' Delaney Nalen was credited with a defensive save.

Less than a minute later, Berestecky netted her eighth of the season, converting a pass from Jurkowitz to make it 4-0 at 30:48.

The scored remained 4-0 in favor of Middlebury until the 37:45 mark. Anna Kenyon scored her fourth of the year when she tipped in a shot off the stick of Pam Schulman.

Middlebury scored the game's final goal at the 46:50 mark when Fowler fired home her team-leading 10th goal. She laced a shot from the right side that bounced off a Bobcat shin guard and into the back of the cage.

Bates looked to get on the scoreboard in the 49th minute when Danielle Pierce dribbled nearly the entire length of the field, but the Middlebury defense tapped the ball away just inside the circle.

Middlebury finished with a 25-3 shots advantage in the contest, while holding a 17-4 edge in penalty corners. Emily Knapp (67:49) and Evangeline Dunphy (2:11) both saw action in net for the Panthers, as Knapp was credited with three stops. Cristina Vega allowed four goals and made seven saves during the first half, while Katie Knox played the second half with three saves and two goals allowed.
