Track & Field Teams Host Meet

The Middlebury College track and field teams opened their home season with a meet at the Dragone Track & Field Complex. Both teams won the meet, with Plattsburgh, Union, S. Vermont and Colby-Sawyer participating.

Last week in California, four Panthers had impressive performances at either San Diego State or Cal.-Poly. Junior Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) broke two school records, finishing the 800 with a time of 1:55.53 and the 1500 in 4:00.27. Qualifying for the NCAA's with a time of 53.23 in the 400 hurdles was sophomore Kevin Bright (Sharon, Mass.). Also qualifying was junior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.) with a time of 4:36.60 in the 1500 meters. The third qualifier was sophomore Kristoph Becker (Media, Pa.) in the javelin, who bettered his effort with a toss of 197'2" this week.

Several Middlebury athletes won events last week on Dragone Track. First-year athlete Christine Bolger (Edina, Minn.) won both the 200 (27.54) and the 400 (1:00.11). Other winners include sophomore Kirsten Lundgren (Oakland, Calif.) in the 100 (13.41), rookie Beth Butler (Bronxville, N.Y.) in the 800 (2:22.34), senior Margery Glover (Lancaster, Pa.) in the 1500 (5:01.09), first-year runner Andrea Giddings (S. Portland, Maine) in the 3000 (10:47.41), rookie Erin Oliver (Essex Junction, Vt.) in the 100 hurdles (16.63) and senior Maryanne Porter (W. Roxbury, Mass.) in the 400 hurdles (1:06.46).

In field events, first-year athlete Meira Lifson (Edina, Minn.) won the pole vault (9'8"), senior Jessica Kosciewicz (Plaistow, N.H.) placed first in the long jump (15'5"), rookie Laura Keeler (Epsom, N.H.) won the triple jump (31'3.25"), sophomore Renee Courchesne (Hingham, Mass.) tossed 114'4" to win the discus, while senior Jennifer March (Fairbanks, Ala.) won the hammer (145'9")

On the men's side, first-year runner Will McDonough (Lancaster, N.H.) won the 3000 (9:16.21), Bright won the 400 hurdles (54.35) and the long jump (21'10"), first-year thrower Bobby Marcoux (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) won the discus (144'8"), while senior Craig Parker (Cohasset, Mass.) won the hammer (150') and Becker won the javelin (197'02").
