The Panther track and field teams boasted three NESCAC Champions at last weekend's NESCAC Track & Field Championships hosted by Trinity College. The women placed third overall, while the men came in sixth.
With the NESCAC Championship in the 400 hurdles was senior Maryanne Porter (W. Roxbury, Mass.) with a time of 1:05.53. Also capturing a NESCAC title was first-year thrower Mary Frederickson (Florham Park, N.J.), who won the javelin with a toss of 116'. Placing second in the 800 was junior Jessica Manzer (Palatine Bridge, N.Y.) with a time of 2:18.41, while senior Molly Yazwinski (Deerfield, Mass.) came in second in the 10,000 in 37:59.14. Middlebury's 4x800 relay team of Porter, Manzer, senior Margery Glover (Lancaster, Pa.) and first-year runner Claire Schultz (San Francisco, Calif.) finished second with a time of 9:33.20. The other top-four finisher in running events was junior Melissa Thacker (Canton, N.Y.), who placed fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.27.
In field events, senior Jennifer March (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished second overall in the hammer, with an NCAA qualifying effort of 154'. Placing second in the discus was sophomore Renee Courchesne (Hingham, Mass.) with a throw of 130'8", while sophomore Whitney Creed (Farmington, Conn.) finished ninth in the shot put with a school-record toss of 38'9". In the pole vault, first-year athlete Meira Lifson (Edina, Minn.) and junior Sarah Berkowtiz (Media, Pa.) finished in a third place tie with a 9'6" effort. Rookie Andrea Giddings (S. Portland, Maine) was the other top four finisher with a time of 11:45.64 in the steeplechase.
On the men's side, sophomore Khristoph Becker (Media, Pa.) turned in a spectacular performance with four top-three finishes. Becker won the javelin for the second straight year, this year with a toss of 180'8". He placed second in the discus (140') and third in the high jump (6'). Placing third in the javelin was sophomore Steve Atkinson (Huntingdon, Que.) with a throw of 165'2", while sophomore Matt Engler (San Diego, Calif.) came in fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.81 seconds. The DMR relay team of Becker, juniors Nick Digani (Northfield, Ill.) and Jonathan Erwin (Rumson, N.J.) and first-year racer Chris Pelliccia (Auburn, Maine) placed third with a time of 10:37.66. complete results
