Field Hockey Clinches Top Spot For NESCAC Tourney

The Panther field hockey has clinched the top seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament with two league games left to play. Middlebury will host the semifinals and championship on November 6th and 7th on Kohn Field. Middlebury is ranked fourth in the latest Division III National poll.

In its only game of the week, Middlebury picked up a 4-3 overtime win at Williams. Junior Ashley Lyddane (Greenwich, Conn.) opened the scoring as she scored on a penalty corner just 1:30 into the contest. Williams tied the game on a redirect midway though the first half to knot the game at one. The Ephs took a 2-1 lead early in the second half, before junior Janie Mackey (St. Louis, Mo.) tied the game with a penalty stroke at 24:46. The Ephs regained the lead at 11:53 with a shot from the outside. With just 3:06 remaining, Lyddane struck again on a penalty corner with an assist from Mackey to force the game into overtime.

In the overtime, first-year player Reid Berrien (Westport, Conn.) would be the hero as she converted a pass from junior Allison Smith (Darien, Conn.) to give the Panthers their 10th victory of the season. Sophomore Meghan McGillen (E. Harwich, Mass.) made eight saves in goal for the win.
