Middlebury Downed by Castleton as Three School Records Fall

Box Score

Middlebury pitcher Irene Margiotta set a pair of single-season records, while Melanie Mandell also broke a school mark, as the Panthers (12-18) dropped an 8-0 game in six innings at Castleton (15-17) on Wednesday. Middlebury returns to action in the NESCAC Tournament at Tufts on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

With her 5.1 innings pitched, Margiotta set a school record for most innings thrown in a season with 124.1, breaking the old record of 121.1 set by Andrea Russo in 2000. She also broke Russo's mark with her 17th complete game of the year. Melanie Mandell hit her 17th double of the season, eclipsing the record of 16 set by Jessica Poracky in 2013.

Castleton went up 4-0 in the first inning on a grand slam to left center by Jamie Boyle.

An RBI single by Calli Van Gorden and a sacrifice fly from Miranda Fish made it a 6-0 game in the fourth.

Tori Swaine drove in a run with an RBI double down the left-field line in the sixth, before an RBI groundout from Boyle ended the game in walk-off fashion.

Sara Tobias and Liza Tarr each went 3-3 for the Panthers, with Tarr belting a double.

Kylie Wright (10-8) picked up the win, allowing nine hits over six innings with three strikeouts. Devin Millerick went 3-4 with two runs scored, while Gorden was 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
