Middlebury Takes Two From Wesleyan, Sweeps NESCAC Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Middlebury completed a three-game sweep of Wesleyan with 3-2 and 4-1 victories over the Cardinals (9-17, 1-8) Saturday afternoon. The Panthers (10-9, 3-3) return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Union for a pair beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Middlebury got on the board in the first inning when Sophie Bolinger singled up the middle and later scored on a triple to left center by Melanie Mandell.

Wesleyan tied the game in the sixth with an unearned run after a pair of Panther errors.

Middlebury went back on top in the seventh as Olivia Bravo hit a one-out single down the left-field line. Emily Moore followed, hitting a double to center that scored Bravo, making it a 2-1 game. Mandell made it back-to-back doubles when she hit one to left center, as Moore crossed the plate for the two-run lead.

The Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the inning with a two-out RBI single from Maddie Ikeda, cutting the lead to 3-2. The hosts left the bases loaded, as Irene Margiotta induced a ground out to end the game.

Margiotta (7-5) earned the win in relief, after Caroline Thacker threw five innings, allowing no runs.

Bollinger, Moore and Mandell each had two hits in the game, with Mandell driving in a pair.

Danielle Rinaldi (4-7) took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits. Marina Williams and Courtney Collins-Pisano each had a pair of hits for Wesleyan, while Ikeda was 3-4.

Middlebury again got on the board first in game two when Moore walked and scored on a triple to center by Mandell. The Panthers added an unearned run later in the inning for a 2-0 lead.

Wesleyan cut the lead in half in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right by Kendall Carr, plating Ikeda, who reached with a bunt single.

The visitors added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning for a 4-1 lead. Mandell and Noelle Ruschil both singled before being driven in on a single to right center by Sara Tobias.

The Cardinals made some noise in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double by Sophia Sciarappa, but she was stranded at third.

Margiotta earned her third win of the weekend, moving to 8-5. She allowed one run on four hits, striking out three.

Mandell went 3-4 with a triple and three runs driven in, Ruschil scored twice, while Tobias drove in a pair.

Lauren Gaffney-Gomez (4-9) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings of work. Sciarappa went 2-2 with a double to pace Wesleyan, while Williams doubled.
