Middlebury Drops Pair On Spring Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Middlebury fell twice on its spring trip in Florida on Sunday, dropping a 9-8 decision in eight innings to Oberlin and then had a 13-7 setback against Miami Hamilton. The Panthers (4-4) are off on Monday, before continuing their spring trip Tuesday with two more games, starting with Buffalo State at 9:45 a.m. followed by a contest versus Kalamazoo.

Middlebury started quickly with two runs in the top of the first inning against Oberlin (4-4). Olivia Bravo led off with a walk and later scored on an outfield error, while Melanie Mandell came home on a wild pitch. The Yeowomen tied the game in the bottom half of the second with a pair of runs.

In the fourth inning, the Panthers regained the lead (3-2) with a run. Ally Doll led the frame off with a single and scored from second on a base hit up the middle by Mandell. Oberlin plated three runs in its half of the inning to jump back in front 4-3.

The Yeowomen added a run in the fifth on a Panther miscue, while Middlebury countered in the sixth. Bravo singled and scored on a double in the gap in left-center field by Emily Moore. Mandell closed the margin to 6-5, driving in Moore with a double to left field. Liza Tarr tied the game two batters later with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Moore was placed on second base to start the eighth inning and scored the go-ahead run on another sacrifice fly by Tarr. Mandell, who got on base with a single, then gave the Panthers an 8-6 edge, racing home on a wild pitch.

Oberlin won the game in the bottom of the frame, scoring three times with Vianca Dagnino driving in the winning run with a single to right field.

Mandell had a big game at the plate for the Panthers, going 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Noelle Ruschil went 3-5 to add to the offense. Irene Margiotta (2-3) went the distance in the circle, throwing 7.2 innings with five strikeouts and only two of the nine runs allowed being earned.

Dagnino finished with three hits for the Yeowomen, including game winner, while Dani Pechthalt (1-0) earned the win in four innings of relief work.

In the second game of the day, the Harriers never trailed, scoring six times in the top of the first inning. The lead grew to 8-0 with two more runs in the fourth, but the Panthers cut into the deficit in their next at bat. Kaylee Gumm walked with the bases loaded and Sophie Bolinger was hit by a pitch one batter later to force in another run. The final score of the inning came on a ground out from Bravo, making the difference 8-3.

The Harriers pushed two more runs across the plate in the fifth, while the Panthers got one back in the latter half of the stanza on a RBI single by Tarr making it a 10-4 contest.

Both teams plated three runs in the seventh inning, with Middlebury getting a RBI single from Sophia Marlino and a two-run triple by Sara Tobias.

At the plate for Middlebury, Marlino and Tobias each went 3-4, with Tobias driving in a pair and scoring once. Caroline Thacker (0-1) got the start and went five innings, surrendering 10 runs in taking the loss.

Regan Butikofer paced the Harriers, finishing 4-5 with two runs batted in. Kaleigh Kilburn picked up the win for Miami Hamilton, allowing seven runs over 6.1 innings.
