Softball Takes Two at Drew

Middlebury improved to 4-0 on the season with 8-2 and 11-0 (5) wins at Drew on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers return to action on Saturday with day one of their spring break trip to Florida.

Leading 1-0 in the fourth inning of game one, Noelle Ruschil and Sara Tobias hit back-to-back solo homers to put the Panthers on top, 3-0.

Middlebury struck for five runs the following inning, as the Panthers sent nine batters to the plate, with four at-bats resulting in doubles. Jen McGann led off with a double and later scored on a two bagger by Emily Moore. Melanie Mandell followed, plating Moore with another double. Ruschil singled to drive in Mandell, while Sophia Marlino belted a two-run double.

Drew plated an unearned run in the bottom of the inning for the 8-2 final.

Moore went 3-4 with two doubles and two RBI, while Mandell, Ruschil and Tobias each went 2-3. Ruschil drove in a pair, while Tobias scored twice.

Irene Margiotta (2-0) picked up the win, striking out five while allowing one earned run over seven innings of work. With her five Ks, she surpassed the 100-career strikeout mark with 103.

Cara O'Leary suffered the loss, allowing three runs and four hits over four innings of work. Sophie Sirota and Madi Precht each went 2-3 at the plate.

Middlebury jumped on the board with three runs in the top of the first inning of game two. Marlino singled and Moore walked, before Marlino scored on a double by Mandell. Ruschi followed, driving in a pair of runs with a base hit.

In the third inning, Moore singled and Mandell walked to lead off the inning. One batter later, Tobias drove in Moore with a single to left. Later in the inning, Sophie Bolinger plated both runners with a single.

Marlino homered in the fourth, before Middlebury went up 11-0 with four runs in the fifth. Liza Tarr doubled and later scored on a single from Ally Doll. Marlino came to the plate and ripped a three-run shot, putting the game out of reach.

The Panthers held in the bottom of the inning, as the game ended due to the eight-run rule.

Marlino finished 3-4 with two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored. Moore went 2-3, scoring twice, while Mandell was 1-2 with an RBI and two runs scored. McGann (2-0) picked up the win, tossing a three-hit shutout.

Four different players singled for the Rangers, as Stephanie Burns suffered the loss, allowing 11 hits and eight earned runs over five innings of work.
