Box Score 2 Amherst took both ends of a doubleheader from Middlebury (7-7, 0-3) on Sunday, earning 3-0 and 7-2 victories for a 3-0 series win. The 17th-ranked Mammoths improved to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in the league. The Panthers return to action on Tuesday when they're scheduled to play their home opening doubleheader against Castleton at 3:30 p.m.
Amherst scored three times on three hits in the fifth inning of game one for the contest's only runs. Andrea Sanders led off with a bunt single and scored when Sammy Salustri tripled to right center. Following a walk and error, Kyra Naftel singled through the left side to drive in the second run of the inning. Alyson Plaman followed with a sacrifice fly to left to make it a 3-0 game.
Middlebury rallied in the seventh with hits by Liza Tarr and Kaylee Gumm, but could not get on the board.
Gina Pagan (7-2) earned the complete-game win, allowing four hits over seven innings with 11 strikeouts. Salustri finished 2-3 with a run scored.
Emily Morris (3-4) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on six hits over six innings of work. Tarr finished the game 2-3 at the plate for the Panthers.
Middlebury loaded the bases in the first inning of game two but was unable to score. Amherst earned a solo run in the first before scoring three times in the second. A two-run single to right by Salustri was the big hit during the inning for the Mammoths.
The Panthers answered in the top of the third with a pair of runs, cutting the lead to 4-2. Olivia Bravo walked and moved to second when Emily Moore reached on a two-base hit to center. One batter later, Tarr singled to left center to drive in both runners.
Amherst came right back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring twice to extend its lead to 6-2. A single by Sanders plated a pair of runners. The Mammoths added a run in the fifth for a 7-2 final.
Lorena Ukanwa (10-0) picked up the win, allowing two unearned runs and six hits over six innings with 13 strikeouts. Sanders went 3-4 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored, while three others Amherst players had multiple hits.
Morris (3-5) took the loss, giving up five earned runs and eight hits over three innings. Irene Margiotta tossed three innings of one-run relief. Bravo went 2-2 in the game, while Tarr drove in a pair of runs.
