The Panthers ski teams returned to action Friday at the annual Dartmouth Carnival. The men's alpine team placed second in the giant slalom, while the women's nordic squad performed well in the 10K classic. Dartmouth leads after one day with 513 points, followed by Vermont (438) and Middlebury (366). Alpine events are taking place at the Dartmouth Skiway, while nordic races are being held at Oak Hill. Action continues on Saturday with the women's 5K and men's 10K free events, as well as the slalom races.

Leading the men in the GS was Riley Plant, who crossed the line with a time of 2:02.17 to finish in third place. Next up for the Panthers was Erik Arvidsson, who earned a time of 2:06.06 to place ninth overall. Pate Campbell was the team's third scorer, finishing 24th in 2:06.56. Former Panther Hig Roberts '14 also competed in the event as an unattached racer, turning in the best two-run time of 2:00.89.

The alpine women were paced by Caroline Bartlett, who put together a two-run time of 2:06.74 to place fifth overall in the giant slalom. Cracking the top 10 was Lexi Calcagni, who finished ninth in 2:07.43. Katie Utter completed the Panther scorers, coming in 17th overall with a time of 2:09.79, as her team finished third in the event.

On the nordic side, the Middlebury women saw two rookies and a sophomore lead them to a solid finish in the 10K event.  Annika Landis earned her best career finish on Friday morning, placing ninth overall with a time of 31:37. Completing the top 10 was Alexandra Lawson, who crossed the line in 38:04. The final Panther to score was Avery Ellis, whose 13th-place effort in 38:13 was the best of her career.

Pacing the men's squad at Dartmouth was Jacob Volz, who covered the 10K course with a time of 31:54 to place 16th. Less than a second behind him in 17th place was Sam Wood, who earned a time of 31:54.9. Rounding out the scorers was Adam Luban, whose time of 32:05 placed him 22nd overall.
