Puccinelli Falls in NCAA Singles, Hughes and Schossberger Bow Out of Doubles

Three Middlebury women's tennis players participated in day one of the NCAA Singles and Doubles Tournaments on Thursday. Christina Puccinelli took part in the singles bracket of 32, while Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger participated in the doubles draw. Matches were held at the Champions Club Tennis Complex at Rivermont Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In the singles competition, Puccinelli dropped her opening-round match in straight sets. Against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Catherine Allen, the second-year Panther fell by scores of 6-1, 6-4. Allen went on to win her round of 16 match, advancing to Friday's quarterfinal. The northeast region's sixth-ranked player, Puccinelli concludes her sophomore season with a record of 22-6 after posting a 21-4 mark as a rookie.

In a bracket of 16 tandems, Hughes and Schossberger were defeated in three sets by Pomona-Pitzer's Emily Chen and Maryann Zhao. Hughes and Schossberger claimed the opening set by a 6-4 tally, but Chen and Zhao win the last two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-4.

Hughes and Schossberger finished their rookie season with an 11-6 doubles record and the region's sixth-ranked tandem.
