Plattsburgh State Takes Two From Softball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Plattsburgh State took a pair of games at Middlebury on Wednesday afternoon, earning a 5-4 win in game one, before holding off the Panthers for an 11-9 victory in the second contest. Middlebury (17-11-1) returns to action on Friday when it hosts Williams in a NESCAC West contest at 5:00 p.m.

In the opener, Plattsburgh State (21-15) led 2-0 when Middlebury got on the board in the third on an RBI single from Melanie Mandell, driving in Olivia Bravo, who led off with a double to right center.

The Panthers went ahead 3-2 in the fifth with an RBI double to right center by Allison Quigley that drove in Ali Della Volpe, who also doubled. Quigley later scored on an error on a ball hit by Sarah Freyre.

The Cardinals plated three runs in the sixth, all coming on a three-run double to left by Dominique Zummo.

Trailing 5-3, Middlebury rallied for a run in the sixth on an RBI single to center by Bravo, plating Kati Daczkowski who had singled. That would be as close as the Panthers would get, as the Cardinals held on for the victory.

Quigley (9-7) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) over seven innings with a pair of strikeouts. Bravo went 3-4 with a double, while Della Volpe, Bravo, Quigley and Erin Giles each doubled.

Rhea Pitkin (8-7) picked up the win, striking out four batters. Haleigh Agans had a 4-4 game, while Zummo drove in three runs for the Cardinals.

In game two, Plattsburgh State jumped out early with four runs in the top of the first inning. Amy Glashoff had the big hit in the inning, driving in a pair with a single up the middle.

Middlebury came right back in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at 4-4. Taylor Gardner singled to center, driving in two runs during the rally.

The Cardinals regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Zummo and a run-scoring single up the middle by Jennifer Groat.

Plattsburgh State led 6-4 before adding two more runs in the top of the fifth to make it an 8-4 game.

In the sixth, the Cardinals plated two run for the third-straight inning. Felicia Torres tripled to right to drive in a run, while the second run scored on an error.

Middlebury made some noise in the seventh, scoring five runs on five hits to make it an 11-9 final. Mandell tripled and scored on a groundout, before Freyre doubled to left center. Gardner moved Freyre to third with a single to left, while Hye-Jin Kim drove home Freyre with a base hit to center. One batter later, Siobhan O'Sullivan doubled to left to drive in three runs.

Irene Margiotta (7-4) took the loss for the hosts, allowing 11 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with four strikeouts over seven innings. Freyre went 3-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored, while O'Sullivan was 2-4 with three RBI and two doubles.
