Softball Takes A Pair From Johnson State

Middlebury took a pair of games from Johnson State (1-9) on Tuesday afternoon, both contests going only five innings. The Panthers (15-8-1) exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning of game one en route to an 11-1 win, while scoring four times in the fifth of game two for the 8-0 victory. Middlebury returns to action at Wesleyan on Friday at 5:00 p.m., while the Badgers are at Husson on Saturday.

Middlebury took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on four hits. Sarah Freyre singled up the middle before scoring on a triple to right by Marybeth Stone. Taylor Gardner followed, doubling to left center to plate Stone. Hye-Jin Kim's single through the right side moved Gardner to third, before she scored on a ground out.

The teams exchanged solo runs in the third as the Panthers held a 4-1 lead. Middlebury blew the game open in the fourth with seven runs on six hits, taking advantage of three Johnson State errors. Kati Daczkowski drove in a pair of runs with a single, while Melanie Mandell also plated a run with a base hit to left. Stone drove in a run later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to center, driving in Olivia Bravo.

Allison Quigley (7-5) picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts over five innings of work. The complete game was her NESCAC-leading ninth of the season. Kim went 3-3 in the game, Gardner was 2-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI, while Freyre was 2-3 with a double.

Kaitlynn Woodward (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing 11 hits, 11 runs (seven earned), while striking out a pair in four innings. Abby McRae and Anna Bingham each singled for the Badgers.

Middlebury took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two. Ali Della Volpe walked and stole second before scoring on a double to center from Mandell.

The Panthers added a pair of runs in the third inning for a 3-0 lead. Daczkowski tripled down the right-field line to lead off the inning. One batter later, Bravo also tripled, with hers going to left center for the RBI. Gardner later singled to right to drive in Bravo for the final run of the inning.

In the fifth, Bravo walked and Freyre singled, before Bravo later scored on a wild pitch. Freyre scored when Stone reached on an error, while Kim doubled to right to plate Stone. Siobhan O'Sullivan followed with a triple to center, as Kim crossed the plate to make it 7-0. One batter later, Daczkowski doubled off the center-field fence, plating O'Sullivan with the game winning run.

Irene Margiotta improved to 6-3 with the win, not allowing a run and just two hits over five innings with a pair of strikeouts. Daczkowski was 3-4 at the plate with a double and two triples to pace the Middlebury offense, while Bravo went 1-1 with a triple and two runs scored.

Hannah Leroux (0-3) suffered the loss, giving up eight runs (seven earned) and nine hits over 4.1 innings. Jennie Moore and Bingham each had hits for the visitors.
