Softball Team Scores 33 Runs in Sweep of St. Joseph's

Middlebury pounded out 33 runs on 35 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of The College of St. Joseph's (0-6) on Tuesday. The Panthers (8-7) won both contests in five innings, earning a 22-2 win in game one, before taking game two, 11-3. Middlebury returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts St. Lawrence in a pair of games beginning at 3:30 p.m.

In the opener, St. Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Middlebury responded in the bottom half of the inning with five runs on five hits. Marybeth Stone homered to right center, driving in Sarah Freyre, who previously singled, to highlight the inning.

Middlebury exploded for 16 runs on 15 hits in the fourth inning, breaking open a 6-2 game. Erin Giles had the big blast in the inning, belting a grand slam homer over the center-field fence. Kati Daczkowski had a single and a double in an inning that saw the Panthers send 20 batters to the plate.

Irene Margiotta (4-3) allowed two hits and no earned runs over four innings to pick up the win, striking out four. Taylor Gardner tossed an inning of scoreless relief.

Freyre finished the game 5-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI, while Ally Doll was 3-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Ali Della Volpe went 2-4 with four runs scored, Daczkowski was 2-5 with five RBI and three runs scored, while Stone finished the game 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. The Panthers tied a school record with 22 hits in the game.

St. Joseph's again went on top in the first inning of game two, taking a 3-0 lead. Middlebury made it a one-run game in the bottom of the inning when Daczkowski doubled to left center to drive in Della Volpe, who later scored on a single by Giles. Melanie Mandell tied the game in the third with a homer to right center, making it a 3-3 game.

In the fourth, Mandell drove in Della Volpe with a single to left, before Giles drove in a pair with a base hit to left field. Leading 7-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Middlebury added four runs to seal the win in five innings. Della Volpe drove in Liza Tarr to make it 8-3, before Mandell belted a three-run shot to center to give the Panthers a walk-off win.

Gardner (1-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs and five hits over four innings, while striking out four. Allison Quigley threw an inning of scoreless relief.

Mandell went 3-4 with two homers, three runs scored and five RBI. Giles went 2-3 with three runs driven in, while Daczkowski was 2-3 with a double and three runs scored. Della Volpe had a 2-4 game, scoring three times, while Tarr finished 2-3, with two runs scored to go along with a double.
