Softball Completes Spring Trip With Two More Games

The Middlebury softball team concluded its spring break trip by splitting a pair of games on Wednesday. The Panthers (6-4) opened with a 10-3 victory over Potsdam (3-4), before falling in their second contest of the day against Wellesley, 8-5.

Middlebury took a 2-0 lead in the third inning against Potsdam, with three-straight doubles from Ali Della Volpe, Olivia Bravo and Melanie Mandell.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the fourth with a pair of runs. Erin Giles walked and scored on a triple to right by Marybeth Stone. Liza Tarr later singled up the middle to plate Stone with the inning's third run.

Potsdam cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth before Stone singled and later scored on a base hit from Tarr to make it a 5-3 game through six innings.

The Panthers gained some breathing room in the seventh inning with five runs on four hits. A two-run double to left by Tarr and an RBI single from Siobhan O'Sullivan drove in three.

Allison Quigley (3-2) earned the complete-game win, allowing just one earned run with six strikeouts over seven innings. Stone finished the game 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Tarr was 3-4 with four runs driven in.

Meghan Dougherty (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs over four innings. Lucy Condon and Chelsea Streeter each had two hits to lead the Bears' offense.

Middlebury jumped on Wellesley (5-2) early as Bravo singled to center and moved up on a base hit to right center by Kati Daczkowski. The pair advanced on a wild pitch before Bravo scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Taylor Gardner. Mandell drove in the second run with a single to left as Daczkowski crossed the plate.

Wellesley tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth before the Panthers again went up by a pair with two runs in the bottom of the inning. O'Sullivan singled, stole second and later scored on a base hit from Della Volpe. Daczkowski later singled to left to drive in Della Volpe for the 4-2 lead.

The Blue went back on top in the seventh inning with six runs on six hits and one Panther error, making it an 8-4 game. Middlebury countered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a single down the right-field line by Hye-Jin Kim, playing O'Sullivan to make it an 8-4 final.

Irene Margiotta (3-2) took the loss for the Panthers, giving up seven earned runs and 11 hits over seven innings. Daczkowski went 3-4, while Kim, Della Volpe, Mandell and Stone each had a pair of hits.

Madeline Bianchi (2-2) earned the win for Wellesley over 6.1 innings of work. Four players had two hits apiece, including Anna Pisac, who was 2-3 with two runs scored.
