Middlebury Sweeps Doubleheader From Maine-Farmington

Middlebury posted a doubleheader sweep over Maine-Farmington on Tuesday in Florida, winning both contests in five innings. The Panthers collected a 15-3 triumph in the opening game and completed the sweep with a 10-0 shutout in the nightcap. Middlebury (5-3) concludes its  spring trip with two more games on Wednesday, facing both Wellesley and SUNY Potsdam.

In game one, the Panthers opened a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Taylor Gardner doubled and scored on an infield error. The lead grew to a pair in the team's next at-bat on a sacrifice fly to right field by Sarah Freyre, scoring Olivia Bravo.

Middlebury plated five runs in the fourth, with Ally Doll providing a RBI single and Bravo a key two-run triple to make it a 7-0 game midway through the inning.

The Panthers had another big inning in the fifth, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight times. Erin Giles doubled twice in the inning and drove in two of the runs. Kati Daczkowski and Gardner each added run-scoring singles as the Panthers led 15-0.

The Beavers plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the final 15-3.

Giles led the Panthers, going 3-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Marybeth Stone went 2-4 with two doubles and Gardner also went 2-4 and scored three times.

Irene Margiotta (3-1) earned the win for Middlebury, allowing three runs (two earned) over five innings for her third victory of the season.

For UMF, Bonnie-Jane Aiken hit a triple, while Erika Whitman (0-1) took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs in four innings.

The Panthers completed the sweep using another big inning in the second game. With the contest scoreless, Middlebury batted around in the second inning, scoring seven times. Giles started the frame with a single and scored one batter later when Stone belted a two-run homer to right field. Daczkowski and Gardner also had clutch hits, delivering RBI doubles later in the inning for a 7-0 lead.

Siobhan O'Sullivan made it 8-0 in the team's next turn at the plate, scoring on a wild pitch, while a sacrifice fly to left field by Ali Della Volpe plated another run.

Middlebury closed out the scoring in the last of the fourth, when O'Sullivan doubled to left-center field to score Stone from first base.

Panther pitcher Allison Quigley (2-2) notched her second shutout of the spring, yielding only two hits in five innings with seven strikeouts.

O'Sullivan was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with two runs score and a RBI, while Stone was 2-3 with home run and two RBI.

For the Beavers (1-7), Skylar Watson (1-2) took the loss, while Kiana Thompson and Amber Grady each finished 1-2 in the batter's box.
