Softball Splits a Pair of Sunday Games

The Middlebury softball team split a pair of games on Sunday during its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida. The Panthers (3-3) opened the day with an 11-0 win over Thomas (2-11) in a five-inning contest. #24 MIT (4-0) downed Middlebury 8-2 in the team's second game of the day. The team returns to action on Tuesday when it battles UMaine-Farmington in a doubleheader.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead over Thomas in the first inning when Sarah Freyre belted a two-run shot to left, plating Olivia Bravo, who led off the contest with a single to right.

Middlebury blew the game open in the second inning with a six-run, six-hit effort. Irene Margiotta singled up the middle to drive in Marybeth Stone, who had doubled to lead off the inning. After a single from Ali Della Volpe, Bravo launched a three-run homer to center, putting her team on top, 6-0. Melanie Mandell followed with a double to left before later scoring on wild pitch. Hye-Jin Kim drove in the final run of the inning with a SAC fly to right, plating Freyre.

Mandell gave the Panthers an 11-0 lead in the fifth when she drove a ball over the centerfield fence for a three-run homer.

Margiotta (2-1) picked up the win with four innings in the circle, allowing no runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Taylor Gardner pitched a scoreless fifth inning.

Bravo and Mandel each went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, with Mandell earning two doubles and a homer and Bravo hitting a long ball. Freyre was 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to go along with a homer, while Della Volpe finished 3-3, crossing the plate twice.

Haley Littlefield (0-4) suffered the loss for Thomas, while Korrie Larent went 2-2.

In game two, MIT scored four runs in the second and three in the fifth for a 7-0 advantage. Middlebury got on the board in the fifth when Siobhan O'Sullivan doubled and later scored on a throwing error.

The Engineers answered in the top of the sixth with a run before the Panthers plated an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, making the final margin 8-2.

Kati Daczkowski claimed two of Middlebury's three hits, going 2-2 at the plate. Allison Quigley (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing 11 hits and seven runs (three earned) over five innings of work with three strikeouts. Margiotta allowed a run in two innings of work.

Ravenne Nasser (2-0) earned the win with no earned runs and three hits allowed over seven innings of work. Devon Goetz led all batters with a 4-4 effort, while Natalie Shifflet was 3-5 with three RBI.
