Gerger, Fields Bow Out of NCAA Singles Tournament

Ria Gerger and Alexandra Fields of the Middlebury women's tennis team participated in day two of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Friday, as Gerger advanced to the semifinal while Fields was defeated in the quarterfinal round. Matches for the three-day tournament were contested at Kalamazoo's Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Both Panther players earn All-American status by reaching the quarterfinal round.

An NCAA quarterfinalist in each of her four seasons, third-seeded Gerger reached Friday's semifinal with a 6-1, 6-3 quarterfinal victory in the morning over Rebecca Ho of Washington-St. Louis. Gerger squared off against second-seeded Eudice Chong of Wesleyan in the semifinals, narrowly dropping the opening set 7-6 (7) before ending her career with a 6-2 setback in the second. Gerger concludes her senior season with a 20-5 record and 35-9 mark over the past two seasons.

Competing in her third NCAA singles tournament in as many years, Fields grabbed an early 4-2 advantage in the first set against top-seeded Juli Raventos of Williams, but Raventos rallied to win five of the final six games for a 7-5 victory. Raventos claimed the victory over Fields with a 6-1 win in the second set. Spending her fall semester studying abroad, Fields ends her spring with a 13-7 record and advanced to her first NCAA quarterfinal.
