Two members of the Middlebury women's tennis team participated in day one of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Thursday, as Ria Gerger and Alexandra Fields both advanced to the quarterfinal round. Matches for the three-day tournament are being contested at Kalamazoo's Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Gerger and Fields both recorded a pair of wins in the tournament of 32 players, with each of Fields' victories coming in straight sets. Competing in her third NCAA singles tournament in as many years, Fields began her tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Kalamazoo's Lauren Woods. Fields squared off in the round of 16 against eighth-seeded Lindsey Liles from Sewanee, squeezing past Lyles by scores of 6-4, 7-5. She will play top-seeded Juli Raventos of Williams in the quarterfinal round on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
An NCAA quarterfinalist in each of the last three seasons, Gerger began the tournament as the #3 overall seed. She edged past Gabi Kitchell of Wisconsin-Whitewater by set scores of 6-1 and 7-5.
In the next round, Gerger dropped the opening set to Ashnaa Rao of Johns Hopkins by a 6-3 score, but rebounded for identical 6-2 victories in the second and third sets, respectively. In Friday's quarterfinal, the fourth of her career, Gerger will battle Washington-St. Louis' Rebecca Ho, the #7 seed in the bracket, on Friday at 10:30 a.m.
