In a battle of top-10 nationally-ranked opponents, the seventh-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team fell at #2 Williams by a score of 7-2 in a NESCAC match played indoors at the Lansing Chapman Rink. The Panthers (5-3, 3-1) return to the court Sunday at 14th-ranked Tufts beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The Ephs (9-2, 1-0) grabbed all three points during Saturday's doubles play. The northeast region's top-ranked duo of Juli Raventos and Linda Shin earned an 8-2 win over the seventh-ranked tandem of Ria Gerger and Kaysee Orozco. The second point came from Williams' Julia Cancio and Hannah Atkinson with an 8-4 victory against Sadie Shackelford and Lily Bondy at #2, while the Ephs' Maya Hart and Mia Gancayco completed the sweep with an 8-5 triumph in the third flight over Christina Puccinelli and Alexandra Fields.
In singles, Fields was the first to finish with 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory over Gancayco in the second flight in a matchup of two of the region's top-15 players. Shin gave Williams a 4-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-4 win against Bondy at #3, while Raventos clinched the fifth and decisive point for the Ephs via a 7-5, 6-4 win in the top spot over Gerger.
Middlebury's other point came from Puccinelli at #4, earning a 6-1, 6-7 (4), 10-8 victory against Atkinson. The hosts concluded the match with a victory from Leah Bush over Orozco at #6 (6-2, 6-4), while Cancio defeated Molly Paradies via set scores of 6-1 and 6-4 in the fifth spot.
