The seventh-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team concluded its spring trip to California with a 6-3 loss to #3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a match played at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Panthers end their trip with a 5-2 record having played a Division II foe and a pair of top-10 nationally-ranked opponents in their three matches. Middlebury has a week off from competition before returning to the court Saturday with a road match against #2 Williams beginning at 11:00 a.m.
The Athenas (12-4) grabbed two of the three points during doubles play. The #1 team of Caroline Ward and Katie Kuosman were the first off the court with an 8-2 victory over Middlebury's Ria Gerger and Kaysee Orozco. At #2, Lily Bondy and Sadie Shackelford evened the match for the Panthers with an 8-3 win over Kyla Scott and Jessie Cruz. The hosts grabbed the 2-1 advantage going to singles when Lindsay Brown and Bria Smith defeated Alexandra Fields and Lauren Amos at #3, 8-2.
In singles action, Brown was the first to complete her match with a 7-5, 6-2 win against Bondy in the third flight, while Cruz made the score 4-1 in favor of CMS by scores of 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Amos at #5. Gerger picked up the second team point for the Panthers in a tight 6-4, 7-6 (7) victory over Ward at #1.
Scott clinched the match for the Athenas with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 triumph versus Middlebury's Christina Puccinelli in the #5 slot. Orozco posted a three-set victory for the Panthers at #6 over Smith (4-6, 6-2, 6-1), while Kuosman rounded out the scoring with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win against Fields in the second slot.
