The seventh-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team began its annual spring break trip to California with a 9-0 victory Tuesday over Division II Point Loma Nazarene at the PLNU Tennis Courts. The Panthers (5-0) will have a day off before they return to action Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. match at #3 Pomona-Pitzer.
Middlebury had little trouble during doubles play, sweeping all three matches against the Sea Lions (8-9). The Panther tandem of Alexandra Fields and Lauren Amos secured the first point at #3 with an 8-0 victory over Jen Weissmann and Kristy Mountain. In the top spot, the duo of Ria Gerger and Kaysee Orozco eased to an 8-2 win against Nikki Newell and Regina von Koch. The Middlebury pair of Lily Bondy and Sadie Shackelford completed the sweep with an 8-3 triumph at #2 over Hillary Ramage and Michelle Torres.
In singles play, the Panthers cruised to straight-set wins in all six flights. Amos picked up the fourth Panther point at #6 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Torres. Gerger clinched the match from the #1 spot with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Newell, the #23 ranked singles player in Division II, while Bondy won in the third spot (6-2, 6-1) against Ramage.
Fields was victorious at #2 (6-2, 6-4) against von Koch, while Christina Puccinelli was next off the court with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at #4 against Weissmann. Molly Paradies rounded out the scoring posting set tallies of 6-4 and 6-2 at #5 versus Nicole Camaratta.
