Box Score 3 The Middlebury softball team (5-3) ended its three-day, eight-game spring break trip by winning two of the three contests on Sunday. The Panthers opened with a 6-5 win over Buffalo State (8-8) before defeating Thomas (4-9) by a score of 5-2. The day ended with a 5-0 loss to seventh-ranked Luther (19-1).
Trailing 5-0 to Buffalo State, Middlebury plated four runs in the fifth to make it a one-run game. Siobhan O'Sullivan led off the inning with a double down the right-field line, scoring on a single up the middle by Erin Giles. Hye-Jin Kim reached on an error, allowing O'Sullivan to score. Taylor Gardner drove in Giles with a ground out, before Ande Troutman double to left center to score Kim. Jackie Stern later singled to left to drive in Troutman and pull the Panthers within a run.
Middlebury tied the game in the sixth when Stern brought home Troutman, who led off with a single, with a ground out to second.
The Panthers won the game walk-off style in the bottom of the seventh. Carlyn Vachow singled through the left side to start the inning and moved to second on a single up the middle by O'Sullivan. Giles advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, before Kim singled through the right side to plate Vachow with the game-winning run.
Allison Quigley started before giving way to Irene Margiotta (1-1), who picked up the win with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief.
Troutman finished the game 3-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while Kim was 2-4 with a run and an RBI. O'Sullivan finished the game 2-4 with a run scored.
Chrissy Rennard and Lexi Haley each had two hits for Buffalo State, with Rennard belting a pair of doubles and scoring twice. Haley suffered the loss in the circle, allowing six runs on 12 hits over 6.1 innings of work.
Trailing 1-0 against Thomas in the day's second game, Middlebury put four runs on the board in the fourth inning. Sarah Freyre led off the inning with a solo home run to left. Kim followed with a walk before Emma Hamilton moved her to second with single to right. Stern reached on an infield single after a fielder's choice, loading the bases for Kat Maehr, who also reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Hamilton. After an unearned run, O'Sullivan got on the base paths with an infield single to drive in Maehr.
Thomas scored to make it a 4-2 game in the sixth, before Middlebury answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Maehr reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on another fielding error. O'Sullivan came to the plate and singled to center, plating Maehr for the 5-2 advantage.
Margiotta (2-1) went four innings to earn the win, allowing one run and two hits with three strikeouts. Lane Dikeman allowed a run in 1.2 innings, while Neve Stearns tossed 1.1 hitless innings to earn her second save of the season.
Vachow and O'Sullivan both went 2-4, with O'Sullivan driving in a pair. Freyre and Hamilton both went 2-3 at the plate, each scoring a run.
Three different players had hits for Thomas, as Faith Robinson took the loss by allowing four runs, two earned, and eight hits over four innings.
Luther led 1-0 in the fourth before opening up the game with a four-run sixth inning on six hits.
The Panthers were unable to get their bats going, as Annie Versnik allowed just two hits over six innings to earn the win. Amanda Witzlib gave up one hit in one inning of work. Paige Lobdell led the Luther hitters with a 3-3 game.
Stearns (1-2) went the distance for the Panthers in the circle, allowing five runs, four earned, and 11 hits over six innings. Maehr, Troutman and Hamilton each had a hit in the game.
