Softball Takes Two of Three on Day Two

The Middlebury softball team won two of three games on Saturday afternoon during its spring break trip to Clermont, Florida. The Panthers (3-2) opened with a 2-1 loss to the University of Chicago (7-1) before bouncing back with a vengeance, downing Oberlin (1-16) 11-0 and Thomas (Maine) (4-6) 8-0 in a pair of five-inning games. Middlebury returns to action on Sunday with games against Buffalo State, Thomas and Luther.

Against Chicago, the Maroons scored once in the sixth and again in the seventh to pick up the 2-1 victory. Irene Margiotta (0-1) was the tough-luck loser, allowing two unearned runs over 6.1 innings with just three hits allowed.

Middlebury scored its solo run of the game in the third when Ali Della Volpe singled to right and moved to second on a groundout. One batter latter, Taylor Gardner singled to left to plate Della Volpe for the 1-0 lead.

Chicago tied it in the seventh on an RBI single by Kathleen Kohm after a runner had reached on an error. The game-winning run scored in the seventh when Carly Schultz doubled and scored on a fielding error.

Kat Maehr led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, but she was stranded at second base.

Three players singled for the Panthers, to go along with Maehr's double. Jordyne Prussak improved to 4-0 for the Maroons, allowing a run and four hits over seven innings of work.

Middlebury exploded for a seven-run first inning in game two of the day, topping Oberlin 11-0.

A two-run single by Siobhan O'Sullivan and a two-run double from Maehr got things going for Middlebury. Erin Giles doubled to left center to score a run, before Sarah Freyre did the same.

After RBI groundouts by Maehr and Giles in the second, Ally Doll doubled to right center in the third to make it a 10-0 game.

Middlebury added a run in the fourth as Neve Stearns and Lane Dikeman (1-0) kept the Yeowomen at bay. Stearns threw a scoreless first, while Dikeman tossed four innings of three-hit relief.

Ten different Panthers had hits in the game, led by two each from O'Sullivan, Maehr, Giles and Freyre. O'Sullivan went 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, Maehr was 2-3 with two runs scored, a double and three RBI, while Giles was 2-3 with a double and two RBI.

Sami Mericle suffered the loss for Oberlin, giving up six runs on five hits, while not retiring a batter. Tori Poplaski finished 2-2 at the plate for the Yeowomen.

The hot bats continued against Thomas as Middlebury struck for a pair in the top of the first inning. Carlyn Vachow plated Jackie Stern with an RBI double, before scoring two batters later.

Middlebury scored four times in the third, highlighted by a two-run single to right center by Freyre. O'Sullivan and Maehr added RBI singles in the fourth to make it an 8-0 final.

Allison Quigley (2-0) picked up the win, tossing a two-hit shutout over five innings with seven strikeouts. Faith Robinson suffered the loss for Thomas, allowing six runs, four earned, over three innings of work.

Stern finished 3-3 with three runs scored, Freyre went 2-3 with two RBI, Vachow was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Hye-Jin Kim finished the game 2-3.
