Middlebury Caps Regular Season With Win at Colby-Sawyer

The Middlebury women's basketball team used a 17-3 run at the end of the first quarter and closed out the regular season with a 46-37 triumph at Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday in the Dan & Kathleen Hogan Center. The Panthers (12-12) return to the court at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the NESCAC Quarterfinals at seventh-ranked Tufts. Middlebury earned conference's #8 seed, while the Jumbos are the top seed. Tuesday's game was the first as a head coach against her alma mater for Middlebury's KJ Krasco, who was a standout player for the Chargers from 2002-05. Krasco was also inducted into the school's hall of fame in 2014.

Colby-Sawyer (12-12) opened the scoring with a three-pointer from Amanda Calvo and later led 5-2. The Panthers scored the next 12 points and took the lead for good, finishing the opening frame on a 17-3 run. Colleen Caveney and Alex Huffman led Middlebury during the run, as the duo scored five points each for a 17-8 lead after one quarter.

The Panthers pushed the margin to as many as 14 points on two occasions in the second quarter. The first came with 4:16 on the clock following a layup by Catherine Harrison, while the other came at the end of the period. Eileen Daley sank a jumper in the final minute, giving Middlebury a 29-15 lead at the half.

Middlebury took its biggest lead of the game (37-17) midway through the third quarter, as Daley made a layup with 4:48 showing on the clock. The Chargers finished the frame with a 10-0 run, closing the gap to 37-27 with 10 minutes remaining.

In the fourth quarter, Colby-Sawyer trimmed the deficit to 41-36 with 1:54 left in regulation on a jumper by Calvo. Sarah Kaufman quickly answered for the Panthers with a basket of her own and sank three free throws in the final minute to secure the 46-37 triumph.

Daley made 7-11 of her attempts from the floor, posting a double-double consisting of game-highs of 15 points and 14 rebounds. Kaufman finished with 13 points, while Harrison snared 13 rebounds and had six points. Huffman had a balanced game with a game-best five steals, six rebounds, five points and three assists.

Calvo led Colby-Sawyer with 12 points, while Lexi Iannone had seven points and team-high six rebounds.
