Low-Scoring Affair Favors Mammoths Over Panthers

The Middlebury women's basketball team fell in a defensive battle against Amherst on Friday by a 49-33 score.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • After the Mammoths jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the contest, an Islay Moore layup sparked six consecutive points to knot the contest with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Three different Amherst players combined to tally six of the next seven, building a 12-7 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
  • Each side struggled to find the cylinder to begin the second stanza until a layup from Elizabeth Cain kicked off a 6-0 run spanning 1:57 for an 18-7 advantage at the 6:17 mark.
  • Emma Kirck provided a spark, nailing a three-pointer that helped Middlebury take six of the next 10 to make it 22-13 with 3:21 left in the first half.
  • The Mammoths held a slim 5-4 advantage down the stretch to take a 27-17 lead into the intermission.
  • Gabby Stuart knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to cut the deficit to seven (27-20) with 7:05 left in the third stanza.
  • Amherst rattled off the next six points before a layup by Teagan Lind made it a 33-22 contest headed to the fourth.
  • A pair of free throws from Stuart with 8:09 left brought the visitors to within 11 (35-24), but the Mammoths rattled off the next five points and weren't challenged en route to the 49-33 triumph.
