Behind a school-record event-winning performance from Isabel Wyer during Saturday evening's 200 freestyle, Middlebury moved up one spot into fifth place following the second day of the 2016 NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship in the Middlebury Natatorium. Williams increased its lead in the team standings on day two with a two-day total of 1,466 points, while Amherst sits in second place with 976 points. Bates (944.5), Connecticut College (771) and Middlebury (769.5) round out the top-five spots.
Wyer highlighted Saturday's championship session for the Panthers with a winning 200 free time of 1:50.36, eclipsing the previous school record of 1:51.00 set back in 2010 by Nora Daly. Morgan Burke finished fifth during the same event in 1:52.63, as both Panther times were NCAA 'B' cuts.
In the night's initial championship final, the 200 medley relay quartet of Sarah Bartholomae, Liza MacCowatt, Megan Griffin and Stephanie Andrews touched the wall in eighth place with a time of 1:47.00.
The second event of the evening was the 1,000 free with Lucy Scott stopping the clock in a time of 10:33.09, good for ninth place. Other top finishes were posted by Griffin with a seventh-place swim in the 100 fly in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 56.86, while Madeline Pierce finished eighth in the 400 individual medley (4:39.66).
In the evening's final event, the 800 free relay team of Wyer, Burke, Kristin Karpowicz and Andrews posted a fifth-place effort of 7:36.82, an NCAA 'B' cut time.
The Panthers will conclude the championship Sunday. Morning preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., while the finals session will start at 5:30 p.m. with the 1,650 freestyle.
