Aided by two school-record performances during the opening day of the 2016 NESCAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship on Friday, Middlebury sits in sixth place among 11 teams competing at the event hosted by the Panthers in the Middlebury Natatorium. Williams leads the way with 731 points, while Amherst (512), Bates (492.5), Connecticut College (394) and Bowdoin (393.5) round out the top five.

Isabel Wyer posted the first school record of the night by touching the wall first in the 500 free final. Her NESCAC-winning time of 4:54.36 was better than the second-place finisher by 2.74 seconds, an NCAA 'B' cut and erased the previous school-record mark of 4:58.87 set by Marika Ross in 2007.

Megan Griffin, who eclipsed her own school record in the 50 fly during Friday's preliminary in 25.29, touched the wall in the evening's championship final with a time of 25.44, good for third place.

In the night's initial event final, the 200 free relay composed of Morgan Burke, Wyer, Griffin and Stephanie Andrews stopped the clock with a sixth-place time of 1:36.47. Another notable performance came in the pool came from Burke in the 50 free with a 10th-place tie in 24.40 during the consolation final. On the diving board, Elissa DeNunzio amassed 347.50 points during the 1-meter final and finished in seventh place.

The Panthers return for day two of the championship on Saturday. Morning preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., while the finals session will start at 5:50 p.m.
