Box Score The Middlebury men's soccer team tied a program record for goals in a game with 10, and extended its season-opening winning streak to three matches with its 10-0 road victory over Green Mountain (0-4) on Tuesday afternoon at Eagles Game Field. The Panthers improve to 3-0 on the young season and return to NESCAC action on Saturday with a game at #10 Amherst at 2:30 p.m.
The Middlebury 10-goal output, including nine scores in the opening 45 minutes, ties a team record set on October 23, 1976 in a match against St. Michael's. In Tuesday's win, a total of 12 Panthers recorded at least one point.
Middlebury dominated play in the opening minutes, striking for an early goal scoring in the third minute of play. Adam Glaser scored his first of the year off a setup from Tyler Bonini. Green Mountain had no answer for the Panther attack, as the visitors quickly added four more goals over a span of 9:23.
Enzo Wiener, Greg Conrad and Glaser each scored an unassisted marker before Conrad connected with Tom Bean, who netted his second of the year at the 9:18 mark to make it a 5-0 lead.
Middlebury tallied four more goals before the 25-minute mark to give them a 9-0 lead that they took into the halftime break.
After the half, the visitors continued to value possession in the Eagles' half being selective in their shots on net. Following an offside call against Middlebury, the Panthers kept the pressure up as the duo of Luis Echeverria and Tom Dils connected during the ensuing play to record the final goal of the match.
The Eagles nearly put one in in the 78th minute off a strike from Victor Gollub, but Panther keeper Duncan Piper just managed to deflect the shot off the cross bar and over to preserve the shutout.
Middlebury held a 20-8 shot advantage over the Eagles and an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
Greg Sydor (3-0) picked up his third win of the season without facing a shot in the opening 11:55. He was replaced by Piper, who made six saves and kept the Panthers' shutout streak alive with a clean sheet over 78:05 of action. Taking the loss in front of the net for the Eagles was Samuel Nichols, who recorded six saves.
