The 14th-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team had a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net in a 1-0 defeat to #8 Wheaton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury had the first quality chance with 13:36 elapsed. Colin Dugan sent a rising free kick from just outside the box that Wheaton goalie Nick Phinney punched over the crossbar.
- At the 17:10 mark, Gavin Randolph sent a bid toward the top-right corner. Phinney tracked the opportunity and secured the stop.
- The Lyons grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute. Aidan Doyle lifted a corner kick that slid past a pack of players and into the right side of the net.
- Joey Waterman needed to make a stop 46 ticks later after Wheaton was granted a penalty-kick chance. Doyle stepped up to the dot and blasted a shot down the middle, but.the Panther goalie read the opportunity and made the save with his midsection.
- Declan Rhatigan nearly doubled the hosts' lead on a point-blank shot off a great pass by Gael Vera. Despite the one-on-one opportunity, Waterman stonewalled the chance.
- Middlebury turned up the pressure with consecutive bids spanning 33 seconds in the 35th minute. Keagan Harder had a sliding shot in the lower-right section that was stonewalled by Phinney, while Pablo Gonzalez had his header shot stopped off a strong corner kick from Ben Shapiro.
- Wheaton was granted another penalty kick at the 54:40 mark after a Panther foul. Rhatigan stepped up and fired left, but Waterman dove at the right moment and made the stop with his hand.
- Will Sawin charged to the left post and flicked a cross-goal chance in the 64th minute that was stuffed by Phinney.
- The Lyons pushed the envelope 44 seconds later on a chance from Joey Everett that was pushed to the left.
- At the 67:29 mark, Sawin flicked a header toward the right side of the net. Antonio Cosentino took a giant step and sent an attempt that crept just over the crossbar.
- Middlebury looked for the equalizer off a throw-in with 74:13 elapsed. Johnson shook his defender and fired a point-blank bid, but Phinney stayed low and deflected the shot away.
- With 9:27 remaining, Harder struck a chance in the box that bounced off the right side of the netting.
- The Panthers' final opportunity came at the 87:38 mark. Dugan ripped a shot that sailed wide left as the Lyons held on for the one-goal victory.
NOTES
- Waterman made four stops in his final game of the season.
- The program made its 18th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Middlebury closes its 2025 campaign with a 10-6-2 mark and a trip to the NCAA postseason for the eighth consecutive season.
