Two members of the Middlebury women's tennis team participated in day one of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Thursday, highlighted by Ria Gerger advancing to the quarterfinal round. Matches are being held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio and hosted by Ohio Northern University and the Warren County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Gerger recorded a pair of wins in the tournament of 32 players, while Alexandra Fields was defeated in her lone match.
An NCAA quarterfinalist in each of the last two seasons, Gerger began the tournament as the #2 overall seed. She edged past Bronte Goodhue of Sewanee by set scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
In the next round, Gerger dropped the opening set to Megan Tang of Chicago by a 6-1 score, but rebounded for 6-3 win in the second and a 6-1 victory in the decisive set. In Friday's quarterfinal, Gerger will battle Williams' Juli Raventos at 9:00 a.m.
Competing in her second NCAA singles tournament, Fields (left) was defeated by Carnegie Mellon's Vanessa Pavia, the #3 seed, by scores of 6-3 and 7-6 (2).
