Softball Team Knocked Out of NESCAC Tourney

Box Score

The Middlebury softball team saw its season come to an end with a 6-3 loss to Williams in a NESCAC Tournament game played at Tufts. The Panthers had defeated Bowdoin earlier in the day to stave off elimination, but were unable to advance to Sunday's final. Middlebury ends the season with a 20-11 mark. The Ephs (30-6) will need to take two from Tufts on Sunday to capture the title.

Emma Harrington went the distance for the Ephs to earn her second win of the tournament and 14th of the season. She allowed five hits and three runs with six strikeouts in seven innings. Taylor Donze finished 3-4 with two runs, Lexi Curt hit a two-run home run as one of her two hits and Ali Michalik was 2 -4 for the Ephs.

Middlebury was led by a hit and pair of RBI from Carlyn Vachow, while four others had singles.

Donze's triple sparked the three-run fourth for Williams. She later scored on a base hit by Melissa Cendejas, while Erica Li singled home another run and Lindsey Precht scored on a wild pitch.

Harrington went her first five innings allowing just one hit, a single to Hye-Jin Kim in the third. Williams added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth highlighted by Curt's two-run homer to right-center. Donze also singled and scored on a squeeze single by Priscilla Pino making it 6-0.

Middlebury cut the deficit in half by scoring three times in the sixth. Ali Della Volpe and Christina Bicks hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. After a wild pitch advanced both, the pair scored on Vachow's single. Another base hit by Erin Giles brought Vachow around to make it 6-3.

However, Harrington retired four in a row to end it and send Williams into the final for the second-straight year.

Neve Stearns (7-5) took the loss for Middlebury, giving up six hits and three runs with two walks and two strikeouts. Allison Quigley allowed three runs on six hits with a strikeout in two innings of relief.
