Box Score Middlebury eliminated Bowdoin from the NESCAC Tournament by a score of 2-0 on Saturday morning. The Panthers (20-10) advanced to take on Williams in another elimination game at 3:00 p.m. The Polar Bears end their season with a record of 27-14.
Allison Quigley (13-4) and Neve Stearns combined for the shutout, as Stearns came on in the seventh to earn her third save of the year. Quigley allowed five hits over six innings with five strikeouts, while Stearns came on with one on in the seventh, allowing a hit with a strikeout for the save.
Kat Maehr led off the fifth with a walk and was put out at second on a fielder's choice hit by Carlyn Vachow. Erin Giles followed with a walk before Siobhan O'Sullivan doubled down the left-field line to drive in Vachow. Hye-Jin Kim later walked, but the Panthers left the bases loaded.
Bowdoin threatened in the top of the sixth with two on and one out, but Quigley got out of the jam.
Heads up base running by Jackie Stern led to the second Panther run in the sixth. After drawing a one-out walk and moving to second on a ground out, Stern scored on a Bowdoin infield error on a ball hit by Vachow.
Stern then came up big defensively for the Panthers in the seventh. With a runner on base, she caught a well-struck ball by Bowdoin's Lauren O'Shea on the run to prevent two Polar Bears from getting scoring position at the least.
Middlebury left 11 runners on base including six in scoring position, while Bowdoin stranded nine with four in scoring position.
Stern had two of Middlebury's four hits in the game, while Adriane Krul and Claire McCarthy had two hits apiece for Bowdoin.
Emily Griffin took the loss for Bowdoin giving up four hits and one run with five walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Julia Geaumont allowed an unearned run without surrendering a hit while walking two with a strikeout in 1.2 innings.
