Softball Drops Game at Wesleyan - Qualifies For NESCAC Tournament

Box Score

The Middlebury softball team completed its regular season with a 2-1 loss at Wesleyan in a make-up game played on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers had won the first two games of the series on March 28, 4-3 and 7-1. Middlebury (19-9, 6-6) earns the second seed in the NESCAC West and will visit the top-seeded NESCAC East squad, Tufts, in the first game of the NESCAC Tournament on May 1. Williams and Bowdoin will play in the other first-round matchup of the double-elimination tournament that continues throughout the weekend.  Wesleyan ends the year 14-17-1, 4-8 in the league.

Rielly Wieners smacked a two-run double to the fence in left field in the bottom of the first, scoring Izzy Linzer, who singled, and Jill Gately, who was hit by a pitch. Those two runs would stand up as the Cardinals picked up the 2-1 win.

Once ahead 2-0, Wesleyan got five innings of shutout, three-hit pitching from Su Pardo, who elevated her record to 4-5 on the season. She pitched innings one, three and five through seven as Julie McDonald tossed innings two and four in alternating fashion as each played first base when not pitching.

Allison Quigley started for the Panthers and gave up both runs on three hits before departing after facing one batter in the third. She took the loss, falling to 12-4 for the year. Neve Stearns threw the last four innings for Middlebury, yielding two hits and no runs with five strikeouts.

McDonald allowed just one hit during her two innings of work, but it was a single up the middle in the fourth inning by Sarah Freyre, driving in the lone Panther run. A walk to Kat Maehr, who was pinch-run for by Jackie Stern, and a groundout put Stern in scoring position for Freyre.
