Softball Sweeps Pair From Plymouth State In Home Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Middlebury won its final two home games of 2015, topping Plymouth State 1-0 and 9-1, as the latter went only six innings. The hosts improve to 19-8 for the season and play their final regular season game on the road against NESCAC West opponent Wesleyan on Sunday. Plymouth State (12-16) hosts a pair of games against Little East rival Eastern Connecticut on Saturday.

Middlebury took the opening game 1-0, scoring the lone run of the game in the third inning. A one-out single by Kat Maehr, who advanced to second on a wild pitch, got things going for the hosts. Later with two outs, Maehr advanced to third on another wild pitch and scored on an Erin Giles single through the left side.

Plymouth State (12-16) had runners on in every inning except the fourth, but hit into three double plays, including two that ended the inning. Plymouth State's best chance to score was in its half of the third inning as Taylor Wood opened with a double off the fence in left field. Wood later advanced to third on an infield put-out, but watched as her teammates made consecutive outs, stranding her at third base.

The Panthers also stranded a runner at third, as Carlyn Vachow roped a one-out triple to left. Vachow later broke for home on a shot up the middle by Giles that was stabbed by Plymouth State's pitcher Whitney Roberts who made a 1-2-5 put-out on Vachow.

Neve Stearns (7-3) got the shut out win in the circle, striking out four, while facing just 23 batters over seven innings, two over the minimum. Giles finished 2-3 with a double and game-winning RBI, while Vachow's three-bagger was the Panthers' other extra-base hit.

Roberts (7-7) took the loss, tossing six innings, with one earned run and two strikeouts. Abrie Davis went 2-3, as Wood added a double.

In the nightcap, Middlebury had 11 singles and one extra-base hit by Maehr that opened the sixth and final inning. The hosts opened the first inning with three runs, including an RBI infield single by Ali Della Volpe to open the scoring. With the bases-loaded and two outs, Allison Quigley laced a two-run single to right for a 3-0 Middlebury lead. The hosts added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a 7-0 advantage.

That was plenty of run support for Quigley (12-3), as the hurler scattered four hits with seven Ks over six innings, allowing a lone run in the sixth inning. In that half of the frame, Plymouth State's Rachel Morrissey had a one-out single to center. After a two-out walk that pushed Morrissey to second, pinch-hitter Nicole Abreu knocked Morrissey in with an RBI single to left field.

Middlebury ended the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Maehr opened the frame with a double to left center. A single by Vachow, who reached second on the play, pushed Maehr to third. A one-out RBI single by Siobhan O'Sullivan moved both runners ahead, including Maehr who scored. Della Volpe ended the game with a sacrifice fly to center that drove in Vachow from third.

Maehr was 2-3 at the dish with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, while Vachow went 2-4 with two runs scored. O'Sullivan, who came off the bench, was 2-2 with an RBI and a run scored, as Quigley went 2-3 with two RBI.

Four different batters had singles for Plymouth State, including Abreu's RBI pinch-hit single. Jessica Pietersen (5-5) pitched the first four innings, allowing five runs, three earned, with a pair of strikeouts. Allison Moylan tossed the final 1.2 innings, allowing four earned runs in relief.
